Backstage Whispers overheard by Richard Andrews

Shakespeare's Globe's winter season in the Wanamaker Playhouse will include the premiere of the musical Romantics Anonymous, book and direction by Emma Rice, music by Michael Kooman and lyrics by Christopher Dimond, adapted from the French-Belgian film Les Emotifs Anonymous, about a chocolate maker, choreographed by Etta Murfett, opening, on 27th October; the premiere of Anders Lustgarten's The Secret Theatre, an espionage thriller set in the court of Elizabeth I, directed by Matthew Dunster, opening on 22nd November; Meow Meow in the cabaret Apocalypse Meow: Crisis Is Born, from 20th December; Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well, directed by Caroline Byrne, opening on 17th January; John Dryden's The Captive Queen, in a new version set in the woollen mills of the north of England in the 20th century, directed by Barrie Rutter, opening on 7th February; Vivaldi's The Four Seasons - A Reimagining, created by puppeteers Gyre & Gimble, composed by Max Richter, opening on 16th March; and the return of Joel Horwood's adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen stories The Little Matchgirl And Other Happier Tales, co-adapted and directed by Emma Rice, from 27th March.

The new season at the Gate Theatre, in Notting Hill Gate, will include the British premieres of Jose Saramago's The Unknown Island, about finding something you didn't think you needed, adapted by Ellen McDougall and Clare Slater, directed by Ellen McDougall, opening on 18th September; and Magali Mougel's Suzy Storck, in which a woman dreams of escape from her life, translated by Chris Campbell, directed by Jean-Pierre Baro, opening on 30th October.

The autumn season at Birmingham Repertory Theatre will include the premiere of Douglas Maxwell's The Whip Hand, exploring power, privilege, blood ties and the inescapable past, directed by Tessa Walker, opening on 6th September; Tom Kempinski's Duet For One, about a concert violinist who is forced to rethink her career and her life after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, with Jemma Redgrave and Oliver Cotton, directed by Robin Lefevre, opening on 26th September; Nativity! The Musical, written and directed by Debbie Isitt, adapted from the films about a school putting on a festive production, with Daniel Boys, Sarah Earnshaw and Simon Lipkin, choreographed by Andrew Wright, opening on 25th October; and Dodie Smith's The Hundred And One Dalmatians, adapted by Debbie Isitt, directed by Tessa Walker, opening on 5th December.

West End Live, the free annual event showcasing West End theatre, will return to Trafalgar Square on Saturday 24th June from 11am until 6pm, and Sunday 25th June from midday until 5pm. Cast members from over 25 West End musicals will be among those performing on the central stage, plus a host of other entertainers, exhibits and activities taking place in marquees around the square. Last year the event attracted over half a million visitors.

The Rumour Machine says: that the current Broadway production of the musical Dear Evan Hansen, book by Steven Levenson, music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, about a high school senior with a social anxiety disorder who finds himself in turmoil following a classmate's death, directed by Michael Greif, with choreography by Danny Mefford, may be West End bound. The Rumour Machine grinds on.
