Backstage Whispers overheard by Richard Andrews

The current National Theatre production of David Eldridge's Beginning, set in the early hours of the morning following two people who met at a party, with Justine Mitchell and Sam Troughton, directed by Polly Findlay, will be remounted at the Ambassadors Theatre, opening on 23rd January.

The London Theatre Company will stage the premiere of Martin McDonagh's A Very Very Very Dark Matter, based on a Mrs Rochesteresque 'dark secret' behind Hans Christian Andersen's children's stories, with Jim Broadbent, directed by Matthew Dunster, at the Bridge Theatre, at London Bridge, from 10th October next year.

Bristol Old Vic's 2018 season will include Anton Chekov's The Cherry Orchard, picturing rural Russia at the brink of the Revolution, in a new version by Rory Mullarkey, directed by Michael Boyd, opening on 8th March; A Monster Calls, based on the novel by Patrick Ness, in which a boy awakes one night to find a monster at his window, devised by the company, directed by Sally Cookson, opening on 7th June; Joe Simpson's Touching The Void, a memoir about a mountain climbing disaster, adapted by David Greig, directed by Tom Morris, opening on 18th September; Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, directed by Wils Wilson, opening on 18th October; and Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, opening on 5th December.

On The Casting Couch: Carey Mulligan will perform Dennis Kelly's solo play Girls & Boys, at the Royal Court Theatre, opening on 15th February; and Zizi Strallen, Jonny Labey and Will Young will head the cast of Strictly Ballroom The Musical, opening at the Piccadilly Theatre on 11th April.

Will Eno's The Open House, a darkly comic twist on a conventional domestic drama, in which circumstances go awry as a couple celebrate their wedding anniversary, with Teresa Banham, Greg Hicks, Lindsey Campbell, Crispin Letts and Ralph Davis, directed by Michael Boyd, will open at the Ustinov Studio at the Theatre Royal Bath on 29th November, and then transfer to the Print Room at the Coronet, in Notting Hill Gate, from 18th January.

The spring season at the Liverpool Everyman will comprise the musical Paint Your Wagon, book and lyrics by Alan J. Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe, set in the Californian Gold Rush of the 1850s, with Marc Elliott, directed by Gemma Bodinetz, with choreography by Tom Jackson-Greaves, from 3rd March; Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange, the 1960s dystopian vision of the future, directed by Nick Bagnall, from 14th April; a future set gender reversed production of Shakespeare's Othello, with Golda Rosheuvel, directed by Gemma Bodinetz, from 28th April; and Bob Farquhar The Big I Am, a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt, an epic journey in search of fame and fortune, directed by Nick Bagnall, from 16th June.

Forthcoming productions at the King's Head Theatre, in Islington, will include Beauty And The Beast: A Parody, book and lyrics by Robyn Grant and Daniel Elliot, music by James Ringer-Beck, a gender reversed version of the classic tale, from 11th December; and Steven Berkoff's East, about three young people growing up in east London, with Russell Barnett, Jack Condon, James Craze, Debra Penny and Boadicea Ricketts, directed by Jessica Lazar, opening on 12th January.
